Carneades Consulting

The problem you see is never, ever, the actual problem; just the symptoms you see. I try to work alongside you and your people to identify the broader issues from the symptoms they see. And then we fix it, together.

What I Do

I'm an academic with a misspent youth which comes in handy.I have endured extensive change management; who has ever worked in defence and has not? Much of it was poorly advised, incoherent, and imposed on a sceptical workforce. I prefer to work with the folk who will implement and work with any changes, using their expertise to understand issues and identify creative solutions, and offer empathic pathways to effective change.I focus on identifying the problem we are trying to resolve, using a range of low key, high impact techniques, but mostly just talking to your own experts.

Who I am.

My name is Andy Corbett. My first career in the Royal Navy submarine service spanned the end of the Cold War and included Command of two ‘Trident’ submarines, capability management in the UK MOD and development of 21st century NATO deterrence and defence strategy.I hold a PhD in Defence Studies from King’s College London and an MPhil in International Relations from the University of Cambridge and I’m a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute and of the Higher Education Academy.Nowadays, I am a senior lecturer at the Defence Studies Department, King's College London. I teach international relations, strategy, ethics and a bit of history; all the subjects you'd expect at the Defence Academy. I am also the programme director for the defence innovation MSc.My research is focused on the anthropological factors in coercive strategy, and my current project is focused on understanding the impact of cultural variations in relationships within alliances and coalitions. In short, I specialise in using unconventional perspectives to look at old or intractable problems in new ways.
